Building a Sustainable Future Through Creativity: Why Skilled Hands Is Launching New Creative Experiences

At Skilled Hands, our mission has always been simple: empower people through creativity.

For years, we’ve worked alongside women, children and families in Nottingham, delivering artisan craft workshops that build confidence, develop practical skills and create opportunities for people to move towards employment, entrepreneurship and improved wellbeing.

Like many community organisations, we’ve seen the funding landscape become increasingly challenging. Grants remain an important part of what we do, but relying solely on external funding is no longer enough to ensure long-term sustainability.

Rather than seeing this as a setback, we’ve chosen to see it as an opportunity to grow.

Turning challenges into opportunities

One of the biggest lessons I’ve gained through my MBA at Nottingham Trent University is that social enterprises need to think creatively about sustainability.

That doesn’t mean moving away from our mission. It means finding new ways to generate income that allow us to continue delivering community impact.

This year, Skilled Hands has taken several exciting steps in that direction.

We’ve expanded our programme of paid creative workshops, including:

  • Bag Making

  • Soap & Body Care Products

  • Jewellery Making

  • Perfume Making

  • Sewing

  • Millinery

  • Children’s After-School Craft Club

  • Summer Holiday Craft Programme

Each workshop helps generate income that supports the free and subsidised opportunities we continue to provide across our community.

Red Carpet 6th Edition : A community celebration

We’re also taking a fresh approach to our annual Red Carpet event.

This year, we’re opening the event to the wider Nottingham community by inviting local designers, models, volunteers and supporters to be part of the experience.

We’re delighted to already have around 38 models preparing for this year’s showcase, and we’re continuing to welcome community members who would like to contribute through garment making, modelling or volunteering.

Red Carpet 6 is becoming more than a fashion event, it’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration and community.

Introducing The Luxury Scent Experience

Perhaps our most exciting new venture is The Luxury Scent Experience.

Hosted at Hockley Arts Club, this premium evening invites guests to create their own signature perfume while enjoying a welcome drink, light refreshments and a relaxed social atmosphere.

It’s designed for anyone looking for a unique evening out, whether with friends, a partner or simply as a chance to enjoy something creative.

Guests will leave with their own beautifully packaged 20ml bespoke fragrance, created entirely by them.

Why your support matters

Every ticket purchased, every workshop booked and every event attended helps Skilled Hands continue investing in people.

By supporting our paid experiences, you’re helping us create opportunities for women, children and families across Nottingham while enabling Skilled Hands to become a stronger and more sustainable social enterprise.

Our goal isn’t simply to survive. It’s to continue growing, innovating and creating meaningful opportunities for the communities we serve.

Join us on the journey

Whether you choose to attend one of our workshops, book a team-building session, support Red Carpet 6 or simply share our work with someone else, you’re becoming part of our story.

Together, we’re proving that creativity can do more than inspire, it can build confidence, strengthen communities and create lasting change.

Thank you for believing in Skilled Hands. We look forward to welcoming you to one of our events soon.
