Sheila Ako

Founder & Director / Head of Programmes & Community Impact

Sheila Ako is the Founder and Director of Skilled Hands Organisation CIC, a Nottingham-based community organisation established in 2018 to empower women and young people through practical artisan craft skills, creativity, and enterprise.

With a degree in Industrial Arts (Textiles) and a long-standing commitment to women’s empowerment since 2007, Sheila brings extensive experience in skills development, training, and community leadership. Her work began in Ghana, where she developed a structured vocational training model that supported hundreds of women to gain skills, confidence, and economic independence. This model was later adapted to meet the needs of communities in Nottingham.

Under Sheila’s leadership, Skilled Hands has grown into a trusted organisation, supporting over 650 women to date and delivering opportunities for children and young people through after-school and community programmes. In the last two years alone, the organisation has delivered over 400 workshops across dressmaking, bag making, jewellery making, millinery, soap making, upcycling, digital growth, and small business start-up.

Sheila is recognised for her creativity, resilience, and passion for empowering others. Alongside leading Skilled Hands, she is currently studying for an Executive MBA at Nottingham Trent University, strengthening the organisation’s long-term sustainability and impact.

Her vision is to enable women to thrive, skills to be passed on, and communities to grow stronger through creativity and opportunity.

Workshop Team

Maureen Champion

Millinery workshop facilitator

I was born and grew up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Then, after spending 38 years living and working in South Africa, we decided in 2021 to come to Nottingham to be closer to family.

In 2023, being retired, I wanted to put my sewing ability to the test, so I applied to do a millinery course run by Sheila at Skilled Hands Organisation. I'm now privileged to be able to give back by volunteering at Skilled Hands Organisation, hopefully giving the ladies the skills needed in millinery and possibly empowering them to start their own millinery business.

Maria Papisz

Dressmaking & Jewellery Making Facilitator

I studied Fashion Design at West Nottinghamshire College and, upon leaving education, worked in various jobs within Nottingham's fashion and textile industries. My first job was as an Assistant Designer for Ladies’ wear, and then l moved on to other areas of design and worked as an Embroidery and Accessory Designer for a company called Strella Group Ltd. Staying in clothing manufacture, I continued to move to other roles, within children's and bridal wear.

In 1999, l became self-employed and designed and made handmade tiaras out of jewellery wire and specially commissioned glass bead components. I supplied companies like Carousel Bridal Veils Ltd on a wholesale basis, as well as individual bridal shops and customers. This pushed my interest in jewellery making and l enrolled on various courses to boost my skills in this area.

In 2005, l started to move on to teaching and trained at Clarendon College and Nottingham University. I taught creative subjects like Jewellery Making at New College Nottingham and also supported students with learning difficulties, like dyslexia, to do their written assignments. Meanwhile, l continued to sell my own designs in costume jewellery at various venues like art galleries and local gift shops.

Back to the present day, l started working with Skilled Hands as a Trainer in July 2023 to the present day, with mainly adult classes. Sharing my experience to achieve finished projects in the areas of Jewellery Making and Dressmaking. Enabling participants to attain an NOCN certificate after a 24-week course.
